NOTES: "I did this painting when I was 21 years old--when I was taking private lessons on St. Botolph Street in Boston. Edmond Piccasio was also in the class, and for that reason I have always thought of this painting as 'Portrait of a Soldier as a young Man' --because he went off to war shortly after this was painted and I've not heard of him since. It was his idea that we paint each other, but he was never satisfied with his painting of me and he destroyed it. I think you can tell when you look at this painting that I was very sad at the time that i did it." [Barbara Larner]
